1. Know your risk factors for eye diseases and see an ophthalmologist regularly.
2. Always wear sunglasses that block 99-100% of UV-A and UV-B rays when outdoors for extended periods, particularly if you spend time in the snow or water.
3. Always wear protective eyewear when participating in sports.  Eye injuries are one of the most preventable causes of blindness.
4. A well-balanced diet including plenty of vegetables and fruit is important for maintaining healthy eyes.
5. Drink plenty of water to prevent dry eye syndrome.
6. Working on a computer can cause eyestrain. Place your screen at or below eye level. Take periodic breaks to rest your eyes.  The “20/20 rule” works well:  Every 20 minutes close your eyes for 20 seconds.
7. Disinfect your lenses properly and adhere to the replacement schedule recommended by your doctor.  Be aware that sleeping in your contact lenses greatly raises your risk of a serious eye infection. 
8. Never share cosmetics, especially eyeliner or mascara. Serious eye infections can be spread from one person to another through cosmetics.  If you wear contact lenses, apply cosmetics after inserting lenses. This helps prevent makeup from getting under the lens and irritating your eyes.
